Canadian Children's Shelter of Hope Foundation

Since 1995 I had been vacationing in Puerto Vallarta and visiting RISE since it opened. I have to admit that some of the children there have stolen my heart.
In my other life I am a Registered Nurse. After becoming involved with the U.S. based Children's Shelter of Hope Foundation through Chris Amo their President, I saw a need for a Canadian foundation that would be able to contribute time and donations to RISE and Pasitos de Luz. It has taken us some time to get here, and presently we are just beginning our journey. We are looking forward to assisting the children of both these wonderful places to have happier and healthier lives.

A few years back during a trip to Puerto Vallarta my childhood friend Anne took me along on a visit to RISE. I was glad to see how happy and well cared for the children seemed to be, however I thought that there was still more that could be done.  As a mother of three boys, I have a personal understanding of what these children need to develop into healthy young adults.
Shortly after that I was invited to join the Canadian Children's Shelter of Hope Foundation’s board as a member and their secretary.  The rest is history.  Since that first visit I have returned to the Refugio several times and participated in the annual RISE fundraiser.  You may have seen me tending bar there in the past, or certainly will at the next fundraiser.  Through this work I have gotten to know the children and staff at RISE and Pasitos de Luz, and met many others involved in these wonderful organizations.  I anxiously await my return next year when I can once again contribute to the lives of these children.

Portland, Oregon: I have loved working with young chldren throughout my life.  I spent 30 years as a teacher of Kindergarten and primary aged children in Portland, Oregon before retiring to spend my winters in Puerto Vallarta 7 years ago.

I am an active advocate for the needs of children both in the United States and in Mexico, and have a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Young Children.  I treasure my time at the Refugio and Pasitos, and have been learning a great deal from these amazing children.

I have known Anne-Marie Haynes and her husband Cullen for many, many  years.  My father and Anne-Marie’s father along with Cullen all worked for the Ministry of Transportation in Toronto, Canada.  It’s from this association that I have learned about the Refugio.  After seeing many pictures sent by Anne-Marie I decided to help in any way that I could.  After introducing both Anne-Marie and Lynn to a couple of accountants to assist with the foundation ,   I saw the need to do more myself than simply contribute financially.
As a financial planner I am aware of the many ways that donors can contribute to charities and hope that my expertise in this area will help assist the Canadian Children’s Shelter of Hope Foundation to grow.  As a mother of two girls and the stepmom of a handicapped stepdaughter I understand the need to help young children that are not as fortunate as mine.  I look forward to making a difference.

I was first introduced to the existence of RISE over dinner in sushi bar, by my friend and long time RISE supporter, Linda Matthie. Her passionate desire to fundraise for RISE was stalled by the burning question of how to develop a fundraising arm in economic times

when there was already no shortage of  outstretched  hands reaching  for cash in Calgary?  Our joint initiative “ Pennies for Pesos” was launched that night, alongside the salmon sashimi.  The following year, I had the privilege of meeting Christine Amo on the deck of her PV condo and the rest is history for me.

I have visited RISE and Pasitos de Luz more than once , played and photographed the children, who have won my heart and commitment, while my husband helped serve up the lunchtime soup.

In a former life I was an ER charge nurse before shifting gears.  Currently I divide my time between creating visual stories as a multi-media artist/
photographer/writer addicted to traveling the world,  and working in the Calgary oil industry, managing land assets for small oil and gas companies.

I am the Founder of the Valkryie Centre for Creative Wellness and co-founder of CAIT – Creative Arts and Integrative Therapies in Health Care  at the University of Calgary.  I am also an instructor in Creative Journal Expressive Arts , with a passion for yoga/ meditation/ art for health.

I am looking forward to continuing to advocate for the needs of the children of RISE and Pasitos , here in the West
